The Lore Study Group course on Egils’s Saga will begin on 15 January 2021 at 1700 EST with a Zoom session.  The course involves reading the Saga in segments, one of the most famous of the Icelandic Sagas, and then taking part in five online Zoom sessions for group discussions.  The first Zoom session will be on 15 January 2021 and prior to that you will have an assigned reading and study assignment.

We will look at how Egil lived in the Norse world and how he is seen today.  As part of this process, we will gain some understanding of the Norse culture.  The course will be led by a seasoned college-level instructor who taught to a military audience for many years and the discussions will be assisted by a Tribe member who has visited many of the actual sites in Iceland connected with Egil’s Saga.  It is not necessary to be a heathen or military veteran to be in the course.

We will discover how Egil as a person developed over time, from his early years until his death.  The Saga follows Egil’s adventurous life from growing up in Iceland through his voyages as a Viking around 10th century Europe, and return to Iceland.  It tells of the memorable events that led to him writing many of his poems which remain famous until this day.

We will even examine some of the main battles Egil was involved in. Mainly the Battle of Brunanburh in 937 CE that today is mostly forgotten. It was the largest and bloodiest battle fought in Anglo-Saxon England prior to the Battle of Hastings. It left its victor, King Athelstan of Wessex, as the first Anglo-Saxon ruler to be called “King of England.”  We will look at, and study, some of the runes and Norse magic that Egil used during his travels as well as his relationship with the Norse God Odin whom he regarded as his friend and patron.  Weapons and tactics of the Viking era will also be covered in the course.

You will need to have a Facebook account and be registered with Zoom to take the course.  You do not have to pay for a Zoom account - just create a login.  The Tribe has an unlimited Zoom account for the discussions.  After paying for the course search on Facebook OWT Lore Study Group -Egil’s Saga and request to join while answering the questions for our background.  This info on the private Facebook group will also be sent to you after you register.  We will also need you email to send you course material.  The Zoom sessions will be on every other Friday at 5pm (1700) EST starting on 15 January 2021 then 29 January, 12 February, 26 February, and the last session on 12 March, 2021.  Zoom sessions will last 60 to 90 minutes.  The link for the Zoom session will be posted beforehand in the Facebook group - OWT Lore Study Group - Egil's Saga.
